Trail mix is one of my go-to snack foods. I love having some on hand when I need a quick snack. However, it’s also really expensive to purchase in the store, so I’ve been buying the ingredients at Costco and mixing them together at home.

Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Trail Mix without Raisins

These are the basic ingredients that I enjoy using in my trail mix and what I have used in the pictures you see here. I get most of my ingredients at Costo, which makes this trail mix super economical to make!

healthy trail mix ingredients.
  • Walnuts: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, walnuts add a satisfying crunch and health benefits.
  • Roasted and salted almonds: Almonds provide a good source of vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy fats.
  • Pecans: These nuts are loaded with vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins and zinc.
  • Roasted pistachios: Pistachios offer a unique flavor and are packed with protein, fiber, and antioxidants.
  • Raw cashews: Cashews are creamy and rich, containing vitamins E, K, and B6, along with minerals like copper and zinc.
  • Chocolate chips: A touch of sweetness that pairs well with the nuts, and a source of antioxidants.
  • Dried blueberries: These berries are full of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins.
  • Dried cranberries: Cranberries add a tart flavor and are rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

One of the core ingredients is a nut that is roasted and salted. If you use all raw nuts, the trail mix will need some salt. Including a salted nut, brings out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients.

Other Items to Include or Variations

  1. Seeds: Add a handful of sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for an extra crunch and additional nutrients.
  2. Dried Fruits: Swap out the dried blueberries or cranberries for dried cherries, apricots, or mangoes. Just ensure they are unsweetened to keep the trail mix healthy.
  3. Spices: For an extra flavor boost, sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon or a pinch of sea salt, if the nuts are not salted.
  4. Coconut Flakes: Unsweetened coconut flakes can add a tropical twist to your trail mix.
  5. Dark Chocolate: If you want a more intense chocolate flavor, use dark chocolate chips instead of regular ones.

How to Make the Trail Mix

The trail mix is easy to make. I add about 1/3 cup of each of the nuts and 1/4 cup of each of the dried fruits and chocolate and then stir it together.

How to Store the Trail Mix

While not required, I prefer to store my trail mix in the refrigerator, especially during the summer months. There’s something about a cool handful of nuts and dried fruit for an afternoon snack!

Creating your trail mix allows you to customize it to your taste and dietary needs. This recipe without raisins ensures that even those who aren’t fans of raisins can enjoy a delicious and healthy snack. Feel free to experiment with different ingredients and find your perfect mix. Happy snacking!
