Why Make Whole Wheat Bread in Your Bread Machine?

There are a few reasons why we choose to make this Copycat Dave’s Killer bread recipe in the bread machine rather than buying it at the store. While we do buy a loaf of bread occasionally, we try to make as much of it at home because we can control the ingredients and keep the cost down.

Whole Wheat Bread Baked at Home is Healthier

Whole wheat bread made in a bread machine is a nutritious and delicious alternative to store-bought white bread. It has more dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals than white bread, which helps to keep you fuller for longer periods of time.

Whole wheat bread made at home does not have all of the fillers and preservatives necessary in store-bought bread. This does mean that it doesn’t last as long, but since it’s made in the bread machine, this whole wheat bread recipe takes very little effort to throw together!

You Have More Control Over the Ingredients in the Whole Wheat Bread

Making whole wheat bread in your own machine gives you control over the ingredients and the texture of the finished product. With a bread machine, you can choose the type of flour used for your loaf, as well as other ingredients like seeds that can improve its flavor, texture, and nutrition.

How is this whole-wheat seed bread similar to Dave’s Killer Bread?

Dave’s Killer Bread has 21 whole grains and seeds. That’s a lot! This bread doesn’t quite have that many, but you can play with the amount of seeds you include.

We’ve included whole wheat flour, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and quinoa, in addition to a few other ingredients.

Dave’s Killer Bread also includes two kinds of sesame seeds, barley, rye, corn meal, millet, spelt, rice flour, amaranth flour, and several other flours. You can definitely add more seeds and different kinds of flour to the recipe, but you’ll have to play around with the moisture level to get it just right. The recipe we have here is a great copycat Dave’s Killer Bread for the Bread Machine.

Ingredients in this Whole Wheat Dave’s Killer Bread Copycat Recipe in the Bread Machine

The foundation of any bread recipe is yeast, water, and flour. From that foundation, you can add ingredients and make adjustments to the recipe. Since this recipe uses bread machine yeast, it’s even more forgiving!

This Dave’s Killer Bread Copycat recipe has about half white and half whole wheat flour, however, the addition of two different oats, and the number of seeds and seed meal included definitely pushes it over to be a healthy whole wheat bread machine recipe!

  • Hemp hearts
  • Wheat germ

Instructions on How to Make the Multigrain Seed Bread in the Bread Machine

We love this recipe because you can throw everything into the bread machine pan and hit start. It takes about 10 minutes to pull together and measure the ingredients.

Add All Ingredients to the Bread Machine Pan

We add the wet ingredients first in the order of the recipe. We place our seeds in with the main bread ingredients to help it all mix together well. After piling your ingredients into the bread machine pan, place the pan in the bread machine.

Set the Bread Machine to the Whole Wheat Setting

If your machine doesn’t have a specific setting for whole wheat, you can use the basic bread setting. Select the 2lb loaf setting.

Check the Bread’s Moisture Levels

During the initial kneading stage, lift the lid and assess the moisture level. Adjust as necessary by gradually adding either more water or whole wheat flour, one tablespoon at a time, until you achieve a perfectly moist ball.

Throughout this first kneading stage, monitor the moisture level carefully, checking it one or two more times. Utilize a silicone spatula to scrape the sides of the bread pan whenever necessary. At the conclusion of this stage, you should have a perfectly moist, round ball. The bread can then be left undisturbed until the bread machine has completed its baking cycle.

When the baking cycle is finished, remove the bread from the machine promptly

If the bread is left to sit in the machine, it will get soggy. Cool it on a drying rack.

How Do You Store Homemade Bread?

Homemade multigrain whole wheat bread does not last as long as store-bought bread because it does not have all of the preservatives in it. If you keep it in an airtight container at room temperature, it will last 3-4 days.

One trick that we have used is to keep it face-down on a cutting board with a plastic shower cap over it.

And there you have it – a healthy, homemade whole wheat bread made right in your bread machine! Not only is this bread packed with nutritious ingredients like quinoa, flax seeds, and hemp hearts, but it also has a rich, hearty flavor that’s sure to please any picky eater! It also goes great with our Creamed Honey!
