Our Family’s History of Pizza Bones and Dipping Sauces

One of our favorite meals to share when we have guests over is pizza and a leafy green salad.

Growing up I remember going out to pizza with my aunt who introduced me to a pizza tradition that I keep to this day. My aunt called the leftover crust pizza bones.

My aunt’s tradition is putting honey on pizza bones. You heard right. After we have eaten the pizza and the crust remains, we drizzle a little honey on it.

You will never see pizza bones going to waste in this house because when you add a little honey it’s like having dessert while we are still eating dinner!

While we continue to use honey on our pizza crust, we have also started topping it with balsamic glaze and experimenting with other flavors as well!

So, what’s good to dip pizza in?

There is a wide variety of dipping sauces that you can use. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • ranch
  • garlic herb dip
  • balsamic glaze
  • creamy garlic sauce
  • cheddar jalapeno sauce
  • cream cheese
  • sour cream
  • buffalo sauce

Many of the sauce ideas above you likely already have in your refrigerator. The dipping sauces for pizza below take a little more effort to make, but also elevate your pizza experience!

20 Sauces for Dipping Pizza Crust

If you’d like to add some flavor to your pizza night, consider making a couple of sauces and creating a tasting bar for your pizza crust.

Creamed Honey poured into mason jars
1. Creamed Honey
Honey is our family's favorite pizza dipping sauce. It adds a sweet flavor to the crust after the savory toppings. Every pizza night we plop a bottle of honey in the middle of the table and this often becomes our dessert for the evening.
This recipe is how we make creamed honey. The creamed honey will act more like a spread than a sauce, but takes your pizza bones to a whole other level!

2. Balsamic Glaze
We have recently been introduced to balsamic glaze. Balsamic glaze or balsamic reduction is a staple in our house. We use it to dress our salads and to add some “zing” to our avocado toast, flatbread, caprese salad, and cooked vegetables. The uses of Balsamic reduction are endless, but who would have thought that it was so easy to make!?
We use this recipe to make the balsamic glaze that we then put on top of our pizza crust!
